Off the Wall

The catalyst that brought clarity to the possibilities of combining my sung performances and visual artwork came through a particular performance in 2011 at the Design Museum in London.

The performance ‘Off the Wall’ was a sung improvised operatic narrative performed to create a dynamic and unusual journey through the Wim Crouwel retrospective. I took, as my ‘libretto’, the text written on the wall at the entrance to the exhibition. Written by the museum it gave a concise account of Wim Crouwel’s life, his innovative design work and his major contribution to contemporary graphics. I performed this sung intervention three separate times and through those improvised and fleeting live moments a glimpse of the unpredictable nature of creativity was revealed.
